28 (14), Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 18, Verse 28

अयुक्त: प्राकृत: स्तब्ध: शठो नैष्कृतिकोऽलस: |

विषादी दीर्घसूत्री च कर्ता तामस उच्यते ||

ayuktaḥ prākṛitaḥ stabdhaḥ śhaṭho naiṣhkṛitiko ‘lasaḥ
viṣhādī dīrgha-sūtrī cha kartā tāmasa uchyate

भावार्थ:

जो कर्ता अयुक्त, शिक्षा से रहित घमंडी, धूर्त और दूसरों की जीविका का नाश करने वाला तथा शोक करने वाला, आलसी और दीर्घसूत्री (दीर्घसूत्री उसको कहा जाता है कि जो थोड़े काल में होने लायक साधारण कार्य को भी फिर कर लेंगे, ऐसी आशा से बहुत काल तक नहीं पूरा करता। ) है वह तामस कहा जाता है॥

Translation

A performer in the mode of ignorance is one who is undisciplined, vulgar, stubborn, deceitful, slothful, despondent, and procrastinating.

18.28 The agent who is ayuktah, unsteady; prakrtah, naive, of very unrefined intelligence, like a child; stabdhah, unbending like a staff-he does not bend down to anyone; sathah, deceitful, cunning, hiding his own powers; naiskrtikah, wicked, given to destroying the livelihood of others; alasah, lazy, not inclined even to his own duties; visadi, morose, ever in a mood of dejection; and dirghasutri, procrastinating, postponing duties for long, [Ast. adds here, ‘sarvada mandasvabhavah, always slow by nature’.-Tr.] not accomplishing even in a month what is to be done today or tomorrow;-one who is such, he ucyate, is said to be; tamasah, possessed of tamas.
